Fatal Turnpike Crash in Broward County After Police Chase

Broward County, FL (Saturday, March 1, 2026) – A deadly crash occurred Thursday afternoon on Florida’s Turnpike following a police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle, authorities confirmed.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), deputies were assisting the Coconut Creek Police Department with a stolen vehicle investigation out of Fort Lauderdale when a stolen pickup truck struck a marked BSO unit and a marked Coconut Creek police unit near Sample Road and the Turnpike shortly after 4 p.m.

Authorities said the driver of the stolen vehicle then fled onto the southbound lanes of the Turnpike, prompting a pursuit involving BSO and Florida Highway Patrol troopers. The chase ended near Mile Marker 58 when the suspect vehicle crashed, resulting in one fatality.

Video from the scene showed extensive damage, including twisted metal scattered across the roadway. A sedan was heavily damaged, and a white Ford F-250 struck a concrete barrier during the incident.

Officials confirmed that both the BSO deputy and the Coconut Creek police officer whose vehicles were struck were transported to local hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The driver of the stolen pickup truck was also taken to a hospital for treatment following the crash.

Authorities said Florida Highway Patrol troopers used Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuvers during the pursuit in an effort to stop the fleeing vehicle, which was considered a danger to public safety.
