5 Steps to Take After a Car Accident in Florida

Based on the reported crash on U.S. Highway 27 in South Bay, these are important steps to follow if you are involved in a car accident.

Immediately move to a safe location if possible and call 911. A serious collision can create additional hazards for drivers, passengers, and others near the roadway. Emergency responders can evaluate anyone who may be injured and secure the crash scene.

Do not leave the accident scene unless necessary for emergency medical treatment or instructed to do so by law enforcement. Remaining at the scene allows officers to document the collision, speak with those involved, and investigate how the crash occurred.

If it is safe to do so, take photos or videos of the accident scene, including vehicle damage, roadway conditions, traffic signs, debris, and the surrounding area. This documentation may help preserve evidence that could later assist investigators, insurance companies, or legal representatives.

Collect contact and insurance information from the other driver or drivers involved, along with contact information from witnesses who observed the crash. Witness accounts may provide useful information about vehicle movements, roadway conditions, and other circumstances immediately before the collision.

Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible. If the crash resulted in injuries or significant property damage, consulting an experienced West Palm Beach car accident lawyer may also help you understand your legal rights and available options.
